Checking Domain Availability

Before you can register a domain name, you need to ensure it's not already taken by someone else. This process is called checking domain availability or performing a WHOIS lookup (though our search tool simplifies this). Here's how you typically do it with NG Domain and what the results mean:

1. Use the Domain Search Tool:

   • Go to the NG Domain website.
   • Locate the prominent domain search bar, usually on the homepage or a dedicated "Domain Search" or "Register Domain" page.

2. Enter Your Desired Domain Name:

   • Type the name you have in mind for your website (e.g., myuniquebrand).
   • You can type just the name, and our system will often check common .ng extensions (like .com.ng, .ng) and other popular TLDs.
   • Alternatively, you can type the full domain name including the TLD (e.g., myuniquebrand.org.ng).

3. Initiate the Search:

   • Click the "Search" button.

4. Understand the Results:

   • Available: If the domain name with the specific TLD you searched for (or the default one we check) is available, it will typically be highlighted prominently, often with a "Congratulations!" message and the registration price. You can then add it to your cart.
   • Taken / Registered: If the domain is already registered by someone else, the result will indicate it's "Taken" or "Unavailable." You won't be able to register this exact domain name with that TLD.
   • Premium: Some domain names are considered "premium" by the registry due to their high value (short, generic, keyword-rich). These will be marked as "Premium" and may have a higher price or require you to contact us for pricing.
   • Reserved: Certain domain names might be "Reserved" by the registry (like NIRA for .ng domains) and are not available for public registration.
   • Unsupported TLD: If you search for a TLD that NG Domain doesn't currently offer or support, it will be indicated as such.
   • Error: Occasionally, there might be a temporary issue contacting the WHOIS server for a specific TLD, resulting in an error message. You can try again later or contact support.

5. Explore Alternatives:

   • If your first choice is taken, our search results page will usually provide a list of alternative suggestions. These might include:
     • The same name with different TLDs (e.g., if myuniquebrand.com.ng is taken, myuniquebrand.ng or myuniquebrand.biz.ng might be available).
     • Slight variations of your searched name.
     • Suggestions based on keywords.

6. Check Multiple TLDs:

   • Even if your primary choice (e.g., .com.ng) is available, consider registering other relevant .ng extensions or even the primary .ng to protect your brand and prevent cybersquatting. Our alternatives table helps with this.
